Phanatic Fanatic
I was raised in a Mets home. My father loves baseball and has been a die hard Mets fan for decades. The only problem was getting to a Mets game with young children from New Jersey was never easy. It was a long ride and, well, I was a loud child and I was probably a real pill in the backseat. So my dad decided he could see his beloved Mets when they played against the Philadelphia Phillies at the easier to drive to Veterans Stadium. It was there I first laid eyes on the Phillie Phanatic. He was the most amazing mascot I’d ever seen. He was goofy, chaotic, and had the same energy as a loud 8 year old in the backseat on a long car ride. I was obsessed. I immediately demanded my dad buy me the Phanatic stuffed animal and I signed up for the fan club. The next year I got a mailer about the Phanatic’s birthday celebration game. I could not contain my joy about being invited to (asked to buy tickets for) the Phantic’s birthday party! I brought it to my dad and convinced him it was an event that couldn’t be missed. And even though the Mets weren’t playing, my dad brought me to see the Phillies. I now live right outside of Philly and though I consider myself a Phillies fan, my true loyalty is to the Phillie Phanatic. So when I saw these glasses at a thrift store I knew I had to make a drink to honor my favorite fuzzy mascot. And why not make a mocktail that I could have shared with him at his birthday party back in the early 90s. Since the Phanatic is rumored to originally be from the Galapagos Islands, I figured I’d make something a bit tropical. I wanted it to be fruity for my young palate but also slightly sophisticated for my current mascot loving self. I used the bright flavors of pineapple and watermelon and the lighter subtle flavors of coconut water, and orgeat. The result is a refreshing sipper that I think the green man himself would enjoy! So shake one of these up next time you're watching the Phillies play and you’re waiting with bated breath for the TV to show the Phanatic up to his antics.
