Sammy DJ’s Dream
I recently found this glass in the cabinet at my parent’s house. It was the favor at my junior prom which was 25 years ago today. This glass apparently had moved from the house I grew up in to my parents’ new house undetected. With this “dream” of a glass, I decided to focus on a drink that my high school aged self might enjoy. Strangely enough, when thinking about things I really enjoyed around that age, Spice Girls lollipops immediately popped into my head. They were strawberry flavored and I would buy them constantly on trips to the grocery store with my dad. I was able to find one for sale on ebay for a reasonable price, but it wasn’t in the best of shape and the flavor has since faded. While at the store trying to find a way to recreate the long lost strawberry taste I spotted Snapple Kiwi Strawberry on the shelves; another constant in my high school life. Along with a very sweet strawberry liquor, I used vodka as the main spirit so that it didn’t overpower my sweet strawberry concoction. The name came from a nickname I was given by my high school crush. He called me Sammy Davis Junior and I called him Edgar Allen Poe. We still keep in touch on Facebook and his husband seems like a lovely man. So even though this may not be a drink I would order now, I know 17/18 year old Sammy DJ would sip this as if it were the most sophisticated cocktail ever poured.
